Aenert news. Ratings
QS World University Rankings is published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK company focusing on the analysis of higher education institutions. It lists the most successful institutions of higher education around the world. The system of the rankings includes three parts – the global overall ranking, the subject rankings, as well as five regional tables, including Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe and Central Asia, the Arab Region, and BRICS.
The recent QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 ranks universities for 54 subjects. It features more than 15,700 different academic programmes from 1594 institutions – 103 of which are new. Academic programmes are ranked over five indicators to effectively reflect their performance, taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation and research ciatations per paper, H-index, measuring both the productivity and impact of an academic or department at a university, as well as International research network (by broad faculty area). For the complete 2023 engineering and technology rankings, please visit QS Top Universities.

In this year’s rankings Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) once again achieves the top spot, thus strengthening its reputation as one of the world’s best technological universities. MIT was established in 1861 and is a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a major player in the development of innovative technology and science. The MIT Energy Initiative, a research network established in 1865, has the declared goal of bearing on climate change throughout the world with novel technology and science-based guidance. It also strives to find new energy solutions e.g. in the field of solar thermal systems, quantum dot materials which can improve the flow of electrons in solar cells, or nanowires, which can be used to make more flexible solar cells. Stanford University and the University of Cambridge, meanwhile, occupy 2nd and 3rd position, respectively. Both institutions have a long history of scientific achievements and outstanding scientists. The Energy Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, for example, runs different research projects aimed at the efficient implementation of renewable energy, such as in the field of algal energy production, where algae are used as energy source in biophotovoltaic panels or chemical looping to enable the clean production of nitrogen-free CO2.
Places 4 to 10 are occupied by the University of Oxford (4), The University of California, Berkeley (5), Imperial College London (6), ETH Zürich (7), Harvard University (8), Tsinghua University (9) and California Institute of Technology (10). ETH Zurich is one of continental Europe's top universities. ETH Zurich is widely recognised for its influence in the progression of advancements in science and technology. It has achieved its reputation particularly in the fields of chemistry, mathematics and physics. There are 32 Nobel laureates who are associated with ETH Zurich, amongst them most famously Albert Einstein.

This year, Nanyang Technological University came in only 14th, after securing 4th position in 2022. The National University of Singapore, Singapore’s flagship university, meanwhile has even descended further to 16th position, after achieving 7th position in 2022. Among its main interests is advancing human society through modern technology and science. It takes an international approach to education and research which is probably why it attracts many foreign students every year. NUS provides outstanding education in the field of petroleum engineering. Among other areas, its fossil fuel research programmes place a strong focus on offshore production technologies, maritime production in the arctic region and deepwater production.
The highest-ranked Chinese university is Tsinghua University, which has moved up 5 positions from last years and occupies 9th position. Tsinghua University is one of the most renowned Chinese universities. It hosts several research institutions, including the National Research Center of Gas Turbine & IGCC Technology and National Engineering Research Centre (NERC) of Clean Coal Combustion, dedicated to finding new and clean methods of harnessing the power of fossil fuels.
All in all, there is a clear dominance of universities located in the US or UK in the top ten. Only two universities outside these English-speaking countries were able to also secure spots in the first decade: ETH Zürich (7th) and Tsinghua University (9th).
