Summary
Extensive development of renewable energy cannot be achieved without a considerable improvement of energy storage methods. Concentrated Solar Power stations combined with thermal energy storage technologies are one of the most realistic options for overcoming this barrier. Recent patented solutions highlight the best innovative developments in this area.
The present bulletin reviews patents granted by patent offices around the globe in 2014-2016 in the field related to Energy Storage in Concentrated Solar Power. General research methodology can be found on the Advanced Energy Technologies website. 158 patent documents from 20 patent offices around the world are represented in the bulletin. In total, 107 applicants from 19 countries and 180 subgroups of the International Patent Classification are mentioned.

Statistical information presented in the bulletin includes distribution of patent documents by years, by patent offices and by applicant countries, applicant-related data (residents and non-residents), and data on the most frequently mentioned International Patent Classification divisions (sections, classes, subclasses, groups, and subgroups). The results of the statistical processing of this data for the entire array of the patents, examined are summarized in the correspondingly-named diagrams and tables. In addition to that, a list of the top 10 groups of patent documents with identical unified indicators is provided, where the groups are sorted by the number of patent documents and include ID numbers and applicant names of the documents.
Data is provided for each of the top 10 applicants, leading in terms of the number of published patent documents among the ones examined in the bulletin, illustrating their share in the established intellectual property market, distribution of documents by problems, IPC sections and patent offices. Representatives of the USA and China prevail among the patenting leaders in the examined period of time. These leaders include: LightSail Energy, Inc. (US), Magaldi Industrie, S.R.L. (IT), BASF, SE (DE), Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (FR), Arkema S.A. (FA), CAS IEE Institute of Electrical Engineering (CN), NEST AS (NO), Zhongying Changjiang International New Energy Investment Co., Ltd. (CN), Abengoa Solar New Technologies, S.A. (ES) and Dow Global Technologies, LLC (US).
The top prominent documents section includes three lists of the top 10 patents having the highest bibliographical rating, the largest number of IPC sections, and the shortest patent pending time. A list of all of the documents reviewed, arranged by the top 10 groups of patent documents with identical unified indicators and by patent offices with the indication of the ID numbers of the granted patents is provided in the conclusive part of the bulletin.
