Air Pollution Statistics: Significant Reduction over 30 Years

Aenert news. Energy Market & Energy Statistics

Emissions of air pollutants in Europe have decreased considerably over the last 31 years, according to the recent data presented by Eurostat.
The statistics include sulphur oxides, nitrous oxides, ammonia, fine particular matter and non-methane volatile organic compounds, but do not analyse greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 1990, the largest reduction in emissions has been recorded for sulphur oxides, decreasing by 93%, followed by nitrogen oxides, decreasing by 63%, and non-methane volatile organic compounds, decreasing by 59%.
Emissions of fine particulate matter fell by 50%, and the smallest reduction were recorded for ammonia emissions: 32%.

This relatively big reduction in emissions of all air pollutants was achieved through a wide range of environmental policies. The EU continues to pursue an active approach to improving air quality and combating air pollution in order to protect the environment and human health.
