GWEC Global Wind Report 2023: third-best year in the wind industry

Aenert news. Energy Market & Energy Statistics
The GWEC Global Wind Report 2023 states that global commitment to renewable energy is stronger than ever, even though 78 GW of new wind power capacity in 2022 is the lowest in three years, but still the third highest in history.

In addition, based on market analysis and policy measures in different countries, experts predict that wind energy installations will exceed 100 GW in 2023 and that 680 GW of new capacity will be added in the next five years.

Wind power growth in 2022 was 9% compared to the previous year, and total global installed wind capacity rose to 906 GW. Of the 78 GW added, about 69 GW came from the onshore wind market, of which China added about a half. The country is also leading the way in the offshore sector, where 8.8 GW has been added, pushing total global offshore wind capacity to 64.3 GW by the end of 2022.

In addition to China, which accounts for 47% of all new capacity, the other onshore wind power markets in the Top five in 2022 were the United States (13%), Brazil (6%), Sweden (4%) and Finland (4%). Europe, as the second largest market, has seen a good performance in onshore wind power installations, increasing the region's market share from 19% in 2021 to 25%. The record 16.7 GW of onshore wind power capacity has been driven primarily by market recovery in Germany, but also by record-breaking installations in Sweden, Finland and Poland.

The world’s largest 2022 offshore markets are China (58%), the United Kingdom (13%) and Taiwan (13%). Due to its first commercial offshore wind project, the 480 MW Saint Nazaire wind farm, France (5%) became fourth largest offshore wind market, followed by the Netherlands (4%) and Germany (3%). The total capacity of offshore wind farms in Europe has reached 30 GW, of which 46% is in the UK. There have been notable successes in a number of emerging offshore wind markets, including Australia, Brazil and India. Experts note that offshore wind is entering a new era and will develop rapidly. GWEC predicts that 680 GW of new wind capacity will be installed globally by 2027, of which 130 GW will be offshore.

In terms of total installed capacity wind power capacity, the Top five markets remained the same as at the end of 2022. China (40%), the US (17%), Germany (7%), India (5%) and Spain (4%) together accounted for 72% of the world's cumulative installations. France, Canada, the UK and Sweden each have 2% of the world's wind capacity.
