Clarivate Plc presented the 11th edition of the Top 100 Global Innovators™ 2022 report, a rating of corporations and research institutions that bring innovations and create new economic value.  This year's list of Top 100 Global Innovators was calculated based on a new methodology using a twin track approach to evaluation: The first track assessed the amount of inventive activity to pass the qualifying criteria while the second track focused on evaluation of all inventions in the Derwent World Patents Index™ across the four factors (influence, success, globalization, and technical distinctiveness).

The new methodology significantly changed the list of innovative companies, increasing regional diversity, giving more recognition to European and Asian firms, and sharply reducing the number of U.S. representatives. Here are the main findings of the report:

  • The Top 100 Global Innovators 2022 come from three continents and 12 countries/regions.
  • This year, the leading country of previous years, the U.S. could not hold its position, decreasing the number of entries by 24 positions coming in second place with 18 companies and organizations.
  • Japan with 35 entries (29 in 2021) is the absolute leader, including five firsttime entrants – Screen Holdings, Shimano, Sumitomo Chemical, Konica Minolta and Kioxia.
  • Germany and Taiwan share third place represented by 9 companies each, followed by France (8), South Korea and China (each 5 companies), Switzerland (4), Netherlands (3), and the UK (2). Sweden and Saudi Arabia also made the list of innovators with one company each.
  • 28 organizations are firsttime entrants to the list, including Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba and digital payment giant Ant Group.
  • The Electronics and computing equipment sector with 28 companies is the most prominent contributor to the Top 100, ahead of the Automotive sector (12), Chemicals and materials (10), Semiconductors (8), Industrial systems (8), Industrial conglomerate (7), Aerospace and defense (6), Energy and electrical (6), Consumer goods and food (4), Government and academic research (3), Telecommunications (3), Software, media, fintech (2), and Pharmaceuticals (2).

The Еnergy and Еlectrical sector is still represented in the 2022 Top 100 Global Innovators including even two more positions than in 2021, with only Japan-based company Mitsubishi Electric, which makes energy and electrical devices and systems, managing to move from the old list to the new one. The Saudi Arabian energy firm Saudi Aramco is the first ever Middle Eastern entry.  US Halliburton and Dutch Signify entered the list for the first time.

Two companies in the energy sector that were on the list of innovators before, but missed out last year, were selected for 2022 again – the French multinational company Alstom which operates worldwide in rail transport markets and Japanese technological innovator Sumitomo Electric.

Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. (US), one of the newcomers on the list, is the undisputed world leader in the number of patented innovations in the modern oil and gas production sector, especially for Directional drilling and Hydraulic fracturing technologies.
