Concentrated Solar Power 2019/ key applicants

Recent Inventions / Brief Overview

The proposed review analyses the inventive activity of the major participants who registered their patent applications in 2019 in the field related to Concentrated Solar Power (concentrator photovoltaics, parabolic trough, linear Fresnel reflector, solar tower etc.). In total, 1316 patent applications accepted for detailed analysis by 38 patent offices around the world and prepared by 706 applicants from 40 countries were collected for revision. The methodology of searching and processing patent documents is provided on the Advanced Energy Technologies website.

The top 10 most productive applicants were representatives from five countries, with the United States holding the largest share. The total share of patent applications of companies and organizations included in the top 10 amounted to just over 15% of the total volume of applicants.

Brilliant Light Power Inc, US filed patent applications in 10 foreign countries, which is more than the others, while Bolymedia Holdings Co. Ltd, China and Brilliant Light Power Inc, US filed in 9. No patent applications filed in foreign countries are found for Chinese entities including Zhejiang Supcon Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Chint New Energy Development Co., Ltd.

Each of the top 10 applicants had pretty individual technological preferences. Thus, NEXTracker Inc. was mainly focused on the Trackers. Another applicant from US – Brilliant Light Power Inc – dedicated the greatest part of its inventions to receivers. Malta Inc was primarily interested in the energy storage technologies. Almost 40% of applications by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. were dedicated to heat removal.

Among the top 10 applicants, and taking into account the total number of documents under consideration, the most mentioned technical problems that were addressed in the patent documents were High costs of equipment production, High costs of repair and replacement and Low efficiency of optics or absorber.
