Bioenergy 2018/ key applicants

Recent Inventions / Brief Overview

This message provides information about the key applicants who registered the largest number of patent applications in 2018 in the field of technologies related to the production of energy from bioresources, including the production of biogas, biofuels from cellulose, algae or syngas. In total, more than 1,600 patent documents from 36 patent offices around the world and prepared by 836 representatives from 42 countries were selected for consideration. In patent applications, 1,473 individual groups of international patent classification were found. Patent retrieval and patent processing procedures are available on the Advanced Energy Technologies website.

A list of the top 10 applicants is presented in the table below. These companies filed 259 patent applications, or about 17.5% of the total. The list is unusually multinational as it includes companies from nine countries from three major economic regions - the United States, Europe and China. The undisputed leader, as in previous years, was the American company Xyleco Inc.

The share of Xyleco Inc. in the register of intellectual property in the review of patent documents amounted to more than 7%. Most of Xyleco’s applications were filed with foreign patent offices, and as a result the company has also become a leader in patenting among non-residents.
The top 10 European companies were represented by residents of the Netherlands, Great Britain, Finland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark.

Most of the represented companies patented in different countries, except for the Chinese China Petroleum & Chemical Company, which filed its applications exclusively with its own patent office. Of the 21 patent offices in the world where key applicants have been patented, it is difficult to identify the dominant ones, although the USPTO, CNIPA, INPI and EPO are most often mentioned among others.
Xyleco Inc. patented its technical solutions in 13 patent offices, and the largest number of patent applications were filed with IP Australia, USPTO, KIPO, EAPO and JPO.

Among the top 10 leading applicants bioenergy technologies related to the production of biogas, cellulosic bioethanol and fuel from algae were most often mentioned. To a lesser extent - methods of thermochemical processing of biomass. For example, in the case of Xyleco Inc. most of the patent applications - almost 73% - are related to the production of Cellulosic ethanol, and 21% to the production of fuel from algae. In the case of Johnson Matthey Plc. in almost 90% - the production of biogas, including from municipal waste and sewage, and only 6 patent applications related to Biomass gasification.
