Events calendar. March 2023

Aenert news. Energy Exhibitions & Conferences
The tectonic changes in the global energy market over the past year inevitably require an appropriate response from both consumers and producers of energy products. In this regard, the March of this year offers unique opportunities for stakeholders to understand and address the current challenges through live interaction at the upcoming international energy events.

The GeoTHERM expo & congress 2023, to be held on March 2-3 in Offenburg, Germany, is Europe's largest geothermal energy trade fair. The accompanying congress will give participants an opportunity to learn about the latest developments in the promising field of deep and shallow geothermal energy.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), by early 2022, the total installed geothermal capacity worldwide is 16 GW or slightly more than 1% of total renewable energy capacity. However, power generation from geothermal sources is about 100 TWh per year, which is vanishingly small compared to generation from fossil fuels, which exceeds 17,000 TWh per year.

Most geothermal plants, including those in Europe, are located in an area of seismic activity, where geothermal sources are closest to the surface. This significantly limits the development of geothermal energy.

At the same time, there are geothermal sources almost everywhere. However, in one case they lie at considerable depths, in the second case they have low water or steam temperatures. Involvement of these sources in the energy turnover is of paramount importance, as it can provide consumers with a large-scale and sustainable supply of electricity and heat. Modern deep and directional drilling technologies from the oil and gas industry as well as binary geothermal plants provide a practical solution to these challenges. The upcoming GeoTHERM expo & congress 2023 with several thousand visitors from forty countries will undoubtedly contribute to the development of this promising field of renewable energy.

CERAWeek 2023 (March 6-10 in Houston, USA) is gaining increased attention this year due to global political and energy transformations coinciding with climate change. As usual, the event will be chaired by Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Yergin, who is one of the world's most respected energy analysts.

Among the issues addressed at CERAWeek 2023 will be:

- Balancing security, transition and affordability;
- Geopolitics and Geoeconomics: An era of volatility;
- Competitive Landscape, Technology and Innovation;
- Financing the Energy Future: The capital transition;
- Supply Chains, Commodity Markets and Energy Transition.

For a quick overview of the complexity of these issues it is enough to look at the map below where the countries of the world are ranked according to the difference between primary energy production and consumption (in green, when production exceeds consumption, the figures indicate the share of own consumption in production) or between consumption and production when consumption prevails (in red, the figures indicate the share of own production in consumption).

The current energy inequality, regardless of its origin, poses an enormous problem for humanity and predetermines the inevitable international interaction. The magnitude of the upcoming event can be seen from last year's data, when the 40th CERAWeek was attended by over 5,000 participants from 87 countries with more than 900 speakers and more than 680 thematic sessions. This year, given the increasingly difficult global energy environment, we should expect even more interest in the event. CERAWeek 2023 is expected to feature many well-known personalities from around the world, including, Hon. John Kerry, United States Department of State, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate; H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, United Arab Emirates Minister of Industry & Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate Change; H.E. Haitham Al Ghais, Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), several other high-ranking officials. Participants will also include executives from many of the world's leading energy companies, including Saudi Aramco, TotalEnergies, BP, Shell, Nextera, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Chevron.

Intersolar & ees Middle East 2023 and Middle East Energy 2023 will be held 7-9 MARCH 2023 at the DUBAI WORLD TRADE CENTER. UAE today is one of the most advanced countries in the development of advanced energy technologies, especially for solar. Suffice it to recall the ambitious Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park project, the final design capacity of which will be several GW of electric power generated by various solar technologies. The upcoming exhibitions will facilitate the entry of exhibitors into the borderless MENA market, where up to 90 GW of renewable energy is expected to be installed over the next two decades, up from 10.5 GW by the end of 2021. The Intersolar exhibition is always positioned as a platform for manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, service providers and partners for solar power technologies.

Among the upcoming energy events in March, it is necessary to mention two gas forums in Europe – the 8th International LNG Summit 2023 (6-7 March, 2023, Düsseldorf, Germany) and European Gas Conference (Energy Council, 27-29 March, 2023, Vienna, Austria). The timeliness and practical importance of both events obviously derives from the need to replace gas flows from Russia, which for many years have been the mainstay of the European balance. The wide representation of industry professionals at these events allows us to count on their practical output for natural gas consumers in Europe.
