GLOBAL WIND REPORT 2025: China accounts for 70% on new wind power

Aenert news. Energy Market & Energy Statistics
The Global Wind Report -2025 represented by Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) gives an overview on the wind energy industry in 2024. Compared to 2023, wind power production increased by 11% bringing the total installed capacity to 1,136 GW. With 117 GW of new installations worldwide 2024 marked another record year for wind energy. Onshore wind with 109 GW connected to the grid accounted for about 83% of new installations, reaching a record-high. In contrast, offshore wind capacity additions reached just 8 GW—26% lower than the previous year and the smallest increase since 2021.

The Asia-Pacific region remains at the forefront, with China accounting for 70% of global installations. Europe holds its position as the second-largest wind market, adding 16.4 GW of new capacity — 12.9 GW of which comes from the EU-27. North America was the third-largest market, though its global share declined by 33% in 2024 — mainly due to U.S. onshore installations falling to their lowest level since 2013. Latin America ranked fourth, while Africa and the Middle East remained the smallest market, despite wind capacity additions doubling compared to the previous year.

At the country level, the top five markets for new installations in 2024 were China, the US, Germany, India, and Brazil — together accounting for 81% of global additions. These countries were also among the top in total installed onshore wind capacity by the end of 2024, with China representing 46% of the global total, the United States – 15%, Germany – 6%, India – 5%, Brazil together with Spain accounted for approximately 3% each.

China also leads in new offshore installations, making up 50% of the additions, followed by the United Kingdom (15%), Taiwan (12%), Germany (9%), and France (9%). With 8 GW of new offshore wind capacity added, the total global offshore wind capacity reached 83.2 GW by the end of 2024. China accounted for half of this total, ahead of the UK (19%), Germany (11%), the Netherlands (6%), and Taiwan (4%).

Foreseeing a promising future for wind energy, GWEC projects new installations will exceed the previous record, reaching 139 GW in 2025. Under current policies, a total of 981 GW of new capacity is expected to be added by 2030. This translates to an average of 164 GW of new installations annually, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 8.8% from 2025 to 2030. Growth in the developing markets of Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East and North Africa region is expected to accelerate, with record capacity being installed every year until 2030.
